"Why the Whales Came is a poignant tale that highlights the importance of community, of people coming together in hard times and seeing the best in each other, no matter what. The audience including young children and adults were captivated by the storytelling and the music" ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Musical Theatre Review on Why The Whales Came

The Show had an original short workshop period in 2019 with British Youth Music Theatre with Director Simon Kane and Choreographer Phyllida Crowley-Smith with Musical Direction from Bella Barlow, which then was schedule to have a full production the following Summer of 2020. However, unfortunately, due to the Global Pandemic, BYMT had to cancel their whole Summer Season of shows. Delightfully, Why The Whales Came was re-programmed for August 2021, at The Drum Theatre, Theatre Royal Plymouth and received sell-out audiences and 5 star reviews.

"The music and lyrics by Bella Barlow and Nikki Racklin are heartfelt, memorable and varied, featuring ballads, high-energy dance scenes and songs inspired by sea shanties and folk music." ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Musical Theatre Review on Why The Whales Came

The cast of BYMT young people where phenomenal bringing the islands and the characters to life.
